$mart Money Picks for Feb. 28, 2012

Basketball betting is back in full swing now that the All-star break finally over, and it’s about to get even crazier when March Madness rolls around.  Here are a few sharp plays that might just help you take a little money from your favorite sportsbook(s) tonight.

Take IU ATS vs. Michigan State at home. (+3, Bovada.lv)

I’m hesitant to take IU on the moneyline here, purely due to MSU’s recent streak of phenomenal play.  But, I’m willing to bet that this ends up close enough to come down to the wire.

Assembly Hall is an absolute madhouse, which is a fact that is only going to be amplified by the ESPN national coverage tonight.  The Hoosiers are 16-1 at home, and if freshman phenom Cody Zeller can figure out the MSU defense (which held to him to season low 4 points last game) the Hoosiers could even pull this one out.  The money is much safer getting 3 here though.

Take the Warriors ATS at the Pacers (+6, sportsbook.ag)

This one’s all about the trends.  Excluding two games against the woeful Bobcats, the Pacers have dropped 8 straight ATS.  The Warriors might not be the most talented team in the NBA, but they have covered in 6 of their last 8.  Getting 6 is a relatively substantial number, so I’m willing to make this play pretty confidently.

Utah SU at Sacremento (+140, Betonline.com)

The Jazz started the year strong but closed the first half 10-3, to slip back under .500 before the break.  They lost their last 3 by blowing second half leads, which leads me believe that fatigue was a factor.  Now that they’ve had some time to rest, I wouldn’t be surprised for them to start the second half strong.

Admittedly, Sacremento is a decent team at home (7-5 this season) but they have dropped 4 of their last 5 against the Jazz, even though Tyreke Evans averages 24ppg against Utah.  At +140, you’re getting some decent value for the money on a play that looks very winnable.
